The other common case is a family or a young professional moving from Mayiladuthurai to Chennai. Many of them are shifting into a rented flat in Tambaram, Perungudi, Porur or somewhere along OMR, and they have to hand the keys back to the house owner by a fixed date. Older homes also have things you don't see in Chennai flats: a wooden oonjal with its chains, heavy brass kuthuvilakku, big vessels used for functions, old teak cots and wooden petti. The oonjal is opened and the chains and hooks are packed separately with labels. Brass items get thick wrapping and are kept standing in cartons, not lying loose. Wooden furniture gets blankets and corner guards so it does not rub against the truck wall.

Shifting During Aippasi and the Monsoon Months

The whole Tamil month of Aippasi (mid-October to mid-November) is the Thula festival period in Mayiladuthurai. Devotees come from all over Tamil Nadu for the holy bath in the Cauvery at Thula Kattam, and the crowd is heaviest on Kadaimugam, the last day of Aippasi, and on Mudavan Muzhukku, the first day of Karthigai. Streets near the Mayuranathaswamy temple and the river get very busy, and processions also go through the temple streets on some days.

If your house is in that area, we avoid those particular days, or we finish loading early in the morning. Do tell us your exact street when booking so we can check.

The same months are also the northeast monsoon season, and the delta districts get heavy rain from October to December. For moves in this period, we wrap mattresses, sofas and electronics in plastic sheet over the normal packing, cover the truck with tarpaulin, and keep loading short if it is raining hard. If it pours on the moving day, we would rather wait an hour than load wet goods.

Deepavali and Pongal weeks also get booked quickly on this route because many people travel home. Booking 7 to 10 days in advance is safer in these weeks.
