Moisture trapped during packing can affect wooden furniture, leather, mattresses and books on a long journey. A few preparation steps help reduce that risk. Make sure everything is completely dry before packing, especially the fridge and the washing machine. Put a few silica gel packets into cartons with leather bags, shoes and electronics. And once you've unloaded, open the wardrobes and cartons within a day or two instead of leaving them packed for weeks.
Both cities get heavy rain, but at different times. Kolkata's monsoon runs mostly from June to September, while Chennai gets its main rain from October to December with the northeast monsoon. The coastal stretch through Andhra and Odisha also sees cyclone warnings in October–November now and then.
You can still shift in these months – we just pack more carefully. Cartons get an outer plastic layer, sofas and mattresses are fully covered, and we keep a tarpaulin ready for unloading.
