Every pocket of Adyar is a little different. Here is what we normally keep in mind while planning a shift.
Gandhi Nagar
A mix of old bungalows and newer apartment blocks off the Main Roads. Some cross streets are narrow and lined with parked cars, so a big truck may have to wait on the main road. We send a small vehicle for shuttling if needed and let you know the extra cost upfront.
Kasturba Nagar
Mostly residential with plenty of apartments near the Kasturba Nagar MRTS side. Lifts in older buildings are small, so sofas and wardrobes often go by the staircase. We measure the lift and the staircase turn during the survey.
Indira Nagar
The avenues are wider here, so container trucks usually reach the building. Most societies fix loading timings and ask for a gate pass. Get the timing from your secretary or the watchman early, and we will plan the day around it.
Shastri Nagar, Bakthavatsalam Nagar and Padmanabha Nagar
Quiet residential streets with many independent houses. Loading is usually smooth, but in the rainy months we keep tarpaulin ready because a lot of the carrying is done in the open.
Karpagam Gardens, Venkatarathinam Nagar and Kamaraj Avenue
Close to LB Road, where traffic is heavy most of the day. We prefer starting loading early in the morning so the truck is out before the evening rush.

Roads, Bridges and Truck Timings Around Adyar
Adyar sits on the south bank of the Adyar river, so most moves out of here either cross a bridge or go down one of a few main roads. In our experience, the route and the time of day change the schedule more than the actual distance does.
Towards Mylapore, RA Puram, T Nagar
The truck crosses the Thiru Vi Ka Bridge near the Adyar signal. Northbound office traffic builds up from about 8:30 in the morning, so we try to cross before that or after 11.
Towards Guindy, Saidapet, Porur
We take Sardar Patel Road, past IIT Madras and CLRI. The road is wide, but it slows down near the Guindy end in the evening. Moves to Porur are better planned for the forenoon.
Towards Thiruvanmiyur, OMR, ECR
LB Road is the usual way out, and it stays slow for most of the day. For OMR and Sholinganallur moves we start loading early so the truck is on Rajiv Gandhi Salai before the IT traffic.
Towards Velachery and Medavakkam
Depending on that day's traffic, we go via Taramani or via Guindy. Our driver decides on the morning of the move, not the night before.
Buildings near the MRTS stations
If you live close to Kasturba Nagar or Indira Nagar MRTS station, the service lanes there are narrow. We park on the main road side and carry from there, and this is already counted in your quote.
Big trucks in the city
On some main roads, bigger goods vehicles are not allowed at peak hours, and these rules get revised from time to time. If your new house is in a central area, we may send two smaller vehicles instead of one big truck.

Packing Furniture, Clothes and Fragile Items
Different belongings need different protection. Separate fragile items from heavy goods, measure bulky furniture and identify anything that needs special handling before packing starts.

List heavier and fragile goods, and discuss suitable carton sizes, internal support and any original packaging you will provide.

How We Pack the Things Adyar Homes Usually Have
Most houses here are a mix of old and new. A teak almirah from the grandparents' time, a 55 inch TV, a pooja shelf full of brass lamps, and a box of Golu dolls on the loft. Each of these needs a different kind of packing. Before we start, show us anything that is old, costly or sentimental, so its handling is discussed separately.
Teak and rosewood furniture
Cots and dining tables are opened at the joints wherever possible. Corners get corrugated sheet. We do not put stretch film directly on polished wood for long trips in humid weather, because it traps moisture. A layer of paper or a blanket goes first. Existing marks are photographed before packing.
Silk sarees and good clothes
Kanchipuram and other silk sarees are kept flat in clean, dry cartons, wrapped in cotton cloth, not plastic. Ask whether wardrobe cartons are available for suits and blazers. Keep one change of clothes for everyone in a separate bag.
Brass, bronze and pooja items
Kuthu vilakku, uruli, bells and pooja vessels are wrapped one by one in paper and bubble wrap and packed in small, strong cartons, because they get heavy very fast. Silver items and idols you are particular about, please carry yourself.
Golu dolls
Clay dolls break at the neck and hands. Each one is wrapped in tissue and bubble wrap, stood upright in a small box with crumpled paper around it, and the box is marked "Golu - top load only". The padi steps are opened and tied together.
Veena and other instruments
A veena travels in its own box or in a wooden crate we make for it, never lying flat under other cartons. Mridangam, harmonium and keyboards go in their hard cases. Please tell us at the quote stage so the crate is ready on the day.
Kitchen, mixie and wet grinder
Steel vessels are nested together. Glass and crockery go in with paper between every piece. The wet grinder drum and stones are removed and packed separately. Oil and pickle bottles get their lids taped and are put in a plastic cover before going into the carton.
TV, computer and electronics
Original boxes are best if you still have them. Otherwise the screen gets foam corners and a crate. Take a photo of the cable connections behind the TV and the computer before unplugging. It makes setting up at the new house much quicker.
Books, files and photo albums
These go in small cartons so they don't become too heavy to lift. In the rainy months we line the cartons with plastic, because Adyar's sea air is humid and old paper picks up damp easily.
Balcony and garden plants
Ask about suitable preparation for your particular plants. Big pots go in sacks. For moves to another city we usually advise against sending plants in the truck, since they can spend long hours in a closed container.

Small Shifts in Adyar: Bachelor Rooms, PG Moves and a Few Items
Not everyone is moving a full house. A lot of our calls from Adyar are from students and young working people renting single rooms in Kasturba Nagar or Gandhi Nagar, or someone who just needs a fridge and a cot taken to a relative's place.
- Single room or 1 RK: a Tata Ace or a similar small vehicle with two helpers is usually enough. With basic packing, these start around ₹3,200 inside Adyar.
- Only a few items: a fridge, a washing machine, a cot, a study table. Tell us the list on WhatsApp and we quote on the call. It works out cheaper than a full 1 RK shift.
- Moving out of a PG or hostel: bring your bags and boxes down to the gate if the PG doesn't allow outside labour inside. We will load from there.
- Same-day moves: for small loads, a same-day slot is often possible if you call in the morning. Month-end days are the exception.

When Is the Best Time to Shift in Adyar?
There is no perfect month, but some dates are clearly easier than others. If your date is flexible, this will help you pick one.
Avoid month-end if you can
Most rentals here change hands around the 1st, so the last week and the first few days of the month are the busiest. Mid-month dates are easier to get, and crews are less rushed.
Weekdays over weekends
Saturdays and Sundays fill up first. If you can take a day off on a Tuesday or Wednesday, you get more choice of time slots.
Muhurtham days and Aadi month
Many families fix the house warming on an auspicious date, and those weekends get booked well in advance. During Aadi month, a lot of people avoid moving into a new house, so it is quieter if that doesn't matter to you.
April to June
The summer heat is the main issue. We start at 7 and try to finish loading before the afternoon, so electronics don't sit in a closed truck in the hot sun for hours.
October to December
Northeast monsoon months. Keep a backup date and read our rainy season tips above.
Families with school-going kids
Most families prefer to shift in April or May so the children can start the new academic year from the new house. Book these months a few weeks early.
How Your Adyar Shifting Works
- Survey and quote. Send us a video call walkthrough or a list of items with photos. For bigger houses we can visit. You get a written quote with everything listed.
- Booking and society permission. Once you confirm the date, take the lift booking and gate pass from both societies. We share the truck number and crew details in advance.
- Packing and loading. The crew comes in the morning, packs room by room, labels each carton and loads the truck. Fragile cartons go on top, heavy furniture at the bottom.
- Unloading and setting up. At the new house, we place cartons in the right rooms, fix the cots and wardrobes, and take back the empty cartons if you want.
Shifting in Adyar During the Rainy Season
October to December brings heavy rain to Chennai, and some streets near the Adyar river and the canal get waterlogged after a good spell. If your shifting falls in these months, a little extra planning saves a lot of trouble.
- Keep one or two backup dates in mind. If there is a heavy rain warning, it is better to shift a day later than to load wet furniture.
- We wrap sofas, mattresses and wooden furniture in stretch film so that rain and humidity do not get in.
- Electronics, documents and photo albums go in sealed cartons, never in open bags.
- Ask your society if the basement parking floods. If it does, we will load from the main entrance instead.
- Adyar is close to the sea, so the air stays humid. Make sure the fridge and washing machine are fully dry before packing, otherwise they start smelling in transit.
Things We Don't Load in the Truck, and Papers You May Need
Please keep these out of the truck
- LPG cylinders: filled cylinders don't go with household goods. If you are moving within Chennai, inform your gas agency about the new address. If you are moving to another city, ask your distributor which transfer or return process applies.
- Petrol, kerosene, paint thinner and crackers: including leftover Deepavali crackers. These can catch fire in a closed truck.
- Cash, gold, silver and documents: passports, property papers, cheque books and medicines travel with you.
- Open food items: curd, ghee, open oil tins and anything from the fridge. Finish them or give them away a day or two before.
- Pets: they travel with the family, never in the goods vehicle.
Papers for intercity and vehicle shifting
- Household goods: we prepare the packing list. Keep a copy of your ID proof handy.
- Car or bike: RC copy, insurance copy and your ID. Follow the carrier’s fuel-preparation instructions, and remove any loose accessories.
- Vehicle going to another state for good: ask your RTO about the NOC and re-registration rules. That paperwork is yours, but we can tell you what the carrier needs.
- Office goods going out of Tamil Nadu: your accounts team may need to raise a delivery challan or e-way bill for company assets. Please check with them before the pickup date.
Before You Pay Any Mover in Adyar, Check These Things

No company name or address on the quote

Most of the money asked in advance
A small booking amount is normal. Paying most of the amount before your goods are even loaded is risky.
No receipt for intercity moves
For moves to another city, you should get a receipt (lorry receipt or consignment note) with the vehicle and delivery details. Don't let the truck leave without one.
Names that look like big brands
Many small operators use names very close to well-known companies. Check that the website, phone number and address on the quote all match.
"Insurance included" with no paper
If insurance is part of the deal, ask for the policy or the cover note, and read what it covers during loading and unloading.
